Langho Guide

Langho, a small village in Lancashire's Ribble Valley, offers a range of cottages with hot tubs for those seeking a countryside escape. Located near the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it's perfectly positioned for exploring both natural landscapes and local attractions.

The area boasts several highly-rated attractions including Whalley Abbey (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor), Clitheroe Castle (4/5 on TripAdvisor) and Brockholes Nature Reserve (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor). The village is just 5 miles from Blackburn and 8 miles from Preston, making day trips easy.

Langho has an interesting connection to football history - Sir Tom Finney, one of England's greatest players, lived nearby and was often spotted in local pubs. The area was also featured in several scenes of the BBC drama 'Last Tango in Halifax'.

Cottages range from cosy one-bedroom conversions to large farmhouses that sleep 12+. Many feature private hot tubs in garden settings. For something different, try the glamping pods at Ribble Valley Country Park, which combine rustic charm with modern comforts including outdoor hot tubs.

Sightseeing

Langho sits in Lancashire's beautiful Ribble Valley, giving you loads of options for days out. I've found the village makes a great base for exploring both countryside and nearby towns without long drives.

Whalley Abbey (BB7 9SS, open daily 10am-4pm) is just 2 miles away and scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. The ruins date back to the 14th century and the grounds are perfect for a morning walk. The tearoom does excellent scones too - we recommend the cheese ones!

Clitheroe Castle (BB7 1BA, open 11am-4pm Tuesday-Sunday) sits 4 miles from Langho and offers fantastic views across the valley. The museum explains the area's history and gets 4/5 on TripAdvisor. The grounds are free to enter if you're watching the budget.

Samlesbury Hall (PR5 0UP, open Sunday-Friday 10am-4pm) is a stunning black and white medieval house with free entry. It scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor and runs ghost tours on selected evenings - book ahead as they sell out fast.

Pet Friendly

Many Langho cottages welcome dogs, with some offering secure gardens - essential if your dog likes to wander! The village itself has several footpaths directly from the centre, meaning you can take morning walks without getting in the car.

The Whalley Arms pub (BB7 9TD) welcomes dogs in the bar area and even offers water bowls and treats. They serve food all day and have a decent beer garden for sunny days when you want to keep your dog with you.

Brockholes Nature Reserve (PR5 0AG) is 15 minutes by car and has multiple walking trails suitable for dogs. They must be kept on leads to protect wildlife, but the lakeside paths provide plenty of interest for curious noses.

If you need emergency vet care, Oakhill Veterinary Centre (BB6 8AJ) is just 10 minutes away in Whalley and offers 24-hour service. Worth noting their number (01254 814863) before you travel.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Langho

Mitton Hall (BB7 9PQ) tops my list for Langho visitors. This stunning 15th-century manor house is now a hotel with gorgeous grounds open to non-residents. The bar serves excellent cocktails and the building itself is packed with original features. Visitors consistently rate it 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor, with many mentioning the Sunday lunch as exceptional.

Langho's St Leonard's Church (BB6 8AB) might look relatively modern from outside, but contains fascinating medieval elements inside, including a 14th-century font. The stained glass is particularly impressive, especially on sunny mornings. One recent visitor wrote: "Unexpectedly beautiful interior - worth popping in even if you're not religious."

Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail starts near Brungerley Bridge (BB7 9HZ) and features over 20 artworks set along a 2-mile riverside path. It's completely free and works in all weather. Kids particularly enjoy finding the wooden sculptures hidden among trees. A TripAdvisor reviewer noted: "Changed my perception of what a sculpture trail could be - the pieces work brilliantly with the landscape."

Is Langho suitable for a weekend break?

Yes! Langho works brilliantly for weekends. The village is just 10 minutes from Junction 31 of the M6, making Friday evening arrivals straightforward. Most cottages offer weekend-only bookings, typically with Friday arrivals. You'll find enough to do for 2-3 days without exhausting the local attractions.

When is the best time to visit Langho?

Spring and early autumn offer the best balance of decent weather and lower visitor numbers. May is particularly good for countryside walks when the bluebell woods near Hurst Green are in bloom. The Clitheroe Food Festival in August makes for a busy but exciting weekend if you like local produce.

Can I get around Langho without a car?

It's possible but limiting. Langho has its own train station with connections to Blackburn and Clitheroe. Local buses run to nearby villages, but services reduce significantly on Sundays. For exploring the wider Ribble Valley, a car definitely gives you more freedom, especially when returning to your cottage and hot tub after a day out.

Are there good places to eat in Langho itself?

Yes! Despite being small, Langho punches above its weight for food. Northcote (BB6 8BE) holds a Michelin star and offers exceptional tasting menus. For more casual meals, The Dog Inn serves proper pub food with huge portions. Langho Convenience Store stocks basics if you're self-catering.

What's the nearest supermarket to Langho?

There's a Sainsbury's in Great Harwood (BB6 7FN), about 3 miles away. For bigger shops, Blackburn has Tesco Extra, Morrisons and Asda, all within 5-6 miles of Langho. Most offer delivery to cottages if you book a slot in advance.

Is Langho suitable for children?

Definitely. Many cottages have enclosed gardens alongside their hot tubs, making them safe for families. Nearby Mrs Dowsons Farm Park (BB1 9RP) is brilliant for younger kids, while older ones might enjoy the Go Ape treetop course at Rivington (BL6 7SB). The Bowland Wild Boar Park (PR3 2QT) is another family favourite about 20 minutes away.
